St. Maria Maggiore

POSTED IN: DU LỊCH ROMA - ITALY

After the Council of Ephesus proclaimed the creed of the mother of God in 431, Sixtus III dedicated a basilica in Rome to the Holy Virgin. Later, the basilica was called the Basilica of Notre Dame. It is the oldest sanctuary dedicated to Mary.

According to ancient tradition, a Roman asked Our Lady of light to know how to use her possessions in the most beneficial way. Early in the morning of August 5, in a dream, Our Lady taught him to build a sanctuary

1 the origin of the basilica was dedicated to the mother of God in Rome.

The oldest church in the West is dedicated to the Holy Virgin. Many events in the history of the Church took place here. The Basilica of Notre Dame is associated with the event of the Council of Ephesus

faith in the mother of God. This cathedral, in the IV century – under her guidance – was built at the site as it is now, not long after the conclusion of the Council of Ephesus. The people of slavery rejoiced at the official proclamation of the truth which they had long believed, and that joy spread throughout the Church.

The faithful built this magnificent cathedral to honor her in the Eternal City. Their joy also spreads to us, when we glorify Mary in a special way. We praise her as Mother of God and as our mother.

According to a moral tradition, a Roman aristocrat John and his wife agreed to donate their estate in honor of the mother of God, but they did not know what to do. The nobleman and the pope on the same night dreamed of the Virgin asking for a cathedral to honor her at Esquiline Hill, which would be unusually snow-covered on August 5. According to this tradition, people call today the feast of Our Lady to snow. Many moral climbers took the title of mother to the snow as patron.

From time immemorial, the Roman faithful have honored Our Lady at this cathedral under the title: Salus Populi Romani... health of the people of Rome. They came to this place to ask for favors and blessings. John Paul II was honored.

Visit Our Lady here after being elected pope. On that occasion, he said:

Mary is called in a special way to show her ‘motherly heart’ in guiding people to the Savior and witnessing to him, not in words, but in love. She is called to draw stubborn people who are unbelievable to the love of Christ. Her vocation is to bring us to Jesus, my son, closer. At the foot of the mother of God, John Paul II dedicated his whole life and deepest desires to her, a dedication that we follow in the example, as children follow in the example of parents. Totus tuus ego sum et omnia Meow sunt. My whole body belongs to me, and all my things are mine. May you guide me in everything.1 with her protection, we will walk firmly on every path.
